Total duration (RT): 2h
Total distance (RT): 3.7km
Positive elevation: 150m
Fairly well-marked trail, with some steep portions.
A few easy fords.
The most difficult is to reach the start of the hike,
since you will have to reach the Relais de la Maroto, a refuge located in the heart of the island, 18km from Papenoo.
An all-wheel-drive vehicle is strongly recommended to go deeper into the Papenoo valley, especially to cross river fords.
If necessary, providers offer excursions in this valley.
Once at the Relais, go down to the Maroto valley, and find the site of Fare Hape, managed by the Haururu association. Pass in front of the small bungalows and park a little further in front of the marae.
Follow the track for about 1km, until you reach a row of trees that stand on the right side of the road. Find the path on the right, and go down to the river.
Cross the river at a fork, then go up the right branch of the river. After a few crossings, you finally arrive at the magnificent Maroto waterfall. Go down to the pool to enjoy a well-deserved bath.
Go back on your footsteps to go around the waterfall on the right. A fairly steep path with a few ropes climbs through dense vegetation. After about 10min, you arrive at the top of a pretty waterfall and its basin, upstream of the Maroto waterfall. Jumping and swimming possible in the basin.
