Hike description
In the Opunohu bay area, many well marked circuits exist so that hiking lovers can enjoy this beautiful place !
From interior of Opunohu Bay, a road goes deep into the land just next to CRIOBE (Center for Insular Research and Environmental Observatory).
This road leads to the Opunohu agricultural school and will also take you to the famous belvedere, an absolutely essential place that is accessible by car.
From the belvedere, you can enjoy the incredible view over Opunohu bay (left) and Cook's bay(right) bay,
and on Mount Rotui between them.
The belvedere is the starting point for several hikes, including the 3 pinus and the 3 cocotiers trails.
Other circuits will take you through the pineapple fields of the plain.
Note that some circuits start from below the belevedere.
The marking is generally well done, and the trails are well maintained.
For mountain biking, specific circuits are also available.
3 cocotiers trail:
You will find the path to the bottom-right of the Opunohu belvedere car park.
Not long after the start, you can take a little detour to see a viewpoint.
Then to go see a small waterfall.
Go down until you cross the river, then continue to follow the path that goes up.
About 1.5km later, take the left path to finally arrive at the pass after a few switchbacks.
Nice view over the bays and the lagoon on the Haapiti side.
Another point of view is accessible by continuing on the ridge, then by taking the left path,
and then the right path a few meters further.
After a slightly steep ascent, you arrive on a cliff at the foot of Mount Mou'a roa.
3 pinus trail:
The start of the trail is at the bottom-left of the Opunohu belvedere car park.
The trail is very well marked, no risk of getting lost!
After about 1km, you arrive at the marae.
You can admire further a magnificent banyan, where burials took place in the past.
Continue on the trail that begins to climb through a few switchbacks.
You finally arrive at the point of view of 3 pinus,
which offers a wonderful view over the two bays!
